About Selling Price Planner
Pricing clarity for people who run the business.
Why this tool exists
Small business pricing involves more than adding a percentage to a supplier invoice. Selling Price Planner brings labor, fees, volume, and overhead into one transparent calculation. It is designed for an owner who needs to test a quote, review a product, or understand why busy months are not always profitable.
What you can expect
Free calculation without an account, editable examples for six business types, three saved scenarios on your device, printable results, and CSV exports. English and Spanish pages offer the same model. No bank connection or customer data is needed.
Our editorial approach
The guide is original educational content written for this tool. Examples are illustrations, not claims about typical business results. The formulas below describe what the tool calculates so you can check the assumptions against your own records. Last reviewed: October 19, 2026.
Methodology
Let C be materials + labor hours × hourly labor cost + other variable cost + flat fee per unit. Let F be monthly fixed costs, Q monthly units, f the percentage fee as a decimal, m the target operating margin, and d the discount. Target list price = (C + F/Q) / (1 − f − m) / (1 − d), rounded upward to the nearest 0.01. Effective selling price P = list price × (1 − d).
Profit and break-even
Contribution per unit = P × (1 − f) − C. Monthly operating profit = Q × contribution − F. Operating margin = monthly operating profit / (P × Q). Markup = unit operating profit / (C + P × f + F/Q). Break-even units = ceiling(F / contribution), when contribution is positive. The graph compares revenue P × units with costs F + (C + P × f) × units.
Limits of the model
One unit type, one transaction per unit, constant unit costs, a constant percentage fee on the effective pretax price, and fixed monthly overhead. The model excludes sales tax/VAT, income taxes, financing, inventory cash timing, and costs not entered. Fractional monthly units, price elasticity, mixed-product break-even, and tiered fee schedules are not modeled. Currency selection formats values; it does not convert them. Discounts apply to all modeled units. Zero or negative contribution has no positive-profit break-even point. For exactly zero contribution with no overhead, all volumes yield zero profit.
